Yahoo! will always move quickly: Carol Bartz
Yahoo ! is a wonderful company — nearly 600 million people come to Yahoo! branded sites every month, and that number is growing. And by the way
Yahoo! India has more than 25 million people visiting us every month and growing, which is more than 70 percent of the overall Internet population in India.
Remember that Yahoo! is one of the founding fathers of the Internet industry, just as Fairchild Semiconductor was for the chip industry. So it's only natural that people will seek new opportunities and turnover will occur. Even still, our attrition numbers are average for our industry.
Yahoo! is filled with some of the smartest and most enthusiastic people I've ever met. And people still seek us out as their employer of choice... after all, whether you're in engineering, content or marketing, where else can you work on #1 products that are viewed by half a billion people around the world?
Some of the most exciting properties like Facebook and Twitter have not come from the bigger established players like Yahoo or Microsoft. Does size inhibit innovation, more so, in the net world? What are you doing to bring about a culture of innovation in Yahoo , something that your arch rival Google has excelled at?
When I first joined Yahoo!, I was amazed at our technology and talent - our labs, research, the insights and algorithms... I still am. That includes our R&D center here in India. We're first rate at delivering great experiences for our users.
As I mentioned we have amazing talent and innovation here at Yahoo!, and just as importantly, we have scale. One out of every two people on the Internet come to Yahoo! every month. They wouldn't come if our sites didn't work, or deliver new, relevant experiences.
This scale means we're able to cull amazing insights from our users that we turn around and use in our new products. Take our new homepage for example - it makes it easier for our users to bring together their online world in a single destination. Users can put virtually anything on their new homepage in just a click or two... whether the content is from Yahoo! or anywhere on the Web. And they can synch their desktop with their mobile phone to get the same experience wherever they go. To make that easy for the average user takes a tremendous amount of technical know-how .
Your Google comparison is not a very apt one. We have very different business models. We're the largest online media company in the world; they're a search company. The areas where we are strongest and lead the industry - products and services like Mail, News, Sports, Finance and Entertainment - Google doesn't really come close to our user numbers.
